Education Assistant Program

Program Introduction

This Education Assistant diploma program leads the students to be members of an education team, supporting students with special and diverse learning needs from Kindergarten through Grade 12 in British Columbia schools.

Education Assistants assist elementary and high school teachers as they work with students who may require additional support, such as those with intellectual challenges, special behavioural needs, and limited English.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Identify the factors that affect child growth and development.
  • Explain exceptionality and special education.
  • Illustrate positive and respectful communication practices and attitudes in guiding children’s behavior.
  • Recognize how to integrate assistive technology into the learning patterns of special learners.
  • Describe the functional aspects of having children with disabilities in the classrooms.
  • Identify Autism Spectrum Disorders and design to implement strategies to enhance learning among children with ASD.
  • Articulate responsible use of applied behavior analysis techniques.
  • Recognize the importance of professional communication and teamwork.
  • Explain exceptionality and special education.

Admission Requirements

Grade 12 or Mature Student Status (19 years of age or more). Students will need to submit proof of English Language Competency by any one of the following options:

Non-native speakers of English:
  • IELTS: 5.5 or
  • TOEFL (paper): 550 or
  • TOEFL (CBT): 210 or
  • TOEFL (IBT): 79 or
  • Canadian Language Benchmark Test (CLB): 6
  • PTE Academic: 50 or
  • Cambridge: CAE or
  • Has earned a Grade 12 graduation diploma from a system in which English is the official language, or
  • Successfully completed a pre-Intermediate certificate from a Language Canada-accredited school or
  • Successfully complete the Saint’s English language proficiency assessment
Domestic Students
  • Grade 10 English with a passing grade of ‘C’
  • Saint Community College English Language Proficiency Assessment Test conducted by the College with a passing of 75-79%

Work Experience Requirements

Prior to going for practicum, the students will also need the following certificates:

• First Aid/CPR
• WHMIS
• Criminal Record Check (CRC)

Students will be assessed using one or more of the following.

• Assignments
• Projects
• Group work
• Presentations
• Exams
• Quizzes
• Instructor-led/supervised Lab Time

In order to complete the Program, Students need to pass all the courses with at least 60% marks and get a “Pass” from their workplace supervisor.

800 Hours.  Full-time: 40 Weeks / Part-time: 43 Weeks

Students should be prepared to complete 2-3 hours every day outside of the classroom.

Tuition Cost

Tuition for this program is $8500.00

Program Delivery Method(s)

Combined Delivery(Both in-class & Distance).

The program has a combination delivery OPTION for students that have a higher level of command of English and the ability to work off-campus in an electronic format. The combination delivery will utilize the LMS course portal platform, Video Conferencing, and the VitalSource Bookshelf (for e-book textbooks). Online Delivery will consist of synchronous video conferencing lectures and Asynchronous activities for learning, such as Discussion Forums, videos, Research, Simulations, and Case Studies. Attendance will also be monitored through the LMS and virtual platforms.

The student will need a laptop or desktop computer which should have access to a microphone and camera. The classes CANNOT BE ATTENDED ON PHONE or other mini electronic devices.
