Program Introduction

This program is intended to help students develop the language competency fundamental to many opportunities in life, including continued learning, employment, and social interaction. The curriculum allows students to study a broad range of informational and literary works. As well as practice using language in written, oral, and visual forms for various functions.

The curriculum emphasizes ensuring that students complete the course with strong basic language skills to prepare them for advanced learning, such as vocational training in health care, technology, business, and education programs. The course is equivalent to English 12 and uses provincially recommended learning resources.

*This program does not require approval by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Postsecondary Education and Future Skills. As such, PTIB did not review this program

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Use language competently to understand and respond to communications in spoken, written, and visual forms.
  • Develop the basic reading and writing skills required of informed citizens prepared for advanced studies and employment in a changing workplace.
  • Develop a foundation of communication skills necessary for life-long learning.
  • Use language appropriate to the situation, audience, and purpose in their day-to-day lives and in the workplace.
  • Present and respond to ideas, feelings, and knowledge.
  • Explore literary works as a way of knowing, developing personal values, understanding our literary and multicultural heritage, and broadening experience.

Admission Requirements

Students are required to be 19 years of age prior to the start of the program or possess a high school diploma (or equivalent).

Students will be assessed using one or more of the following.

• Group work
• Presentations
• Exams
• Quizzes
• Instructor-led/supervised Lab Time

In order to complete the Program, Students need to pass all the courses with at least 60% marks.

Students should be prepared to complete 2-3 hours every day outside of the classroom.

There are no specific career opportunities leading from the program as it is an English language preparation program.
